The Hortons
This Horton family lived in the Kirkheaton area, north east of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
(MAP).
The ancestry was traced to William Horton in the 1841 Census then back to Thomas Horton born in 1785. In 1841 they lived in the same area, along with other Hortons, and appeared to be in the manufacturing business, said to be fancy box makers. In 1851, Thomas had become a farmer and William became owner or tenant by 1861.
Great grandfather Charles Henry Horton was initially listed as a farmers boy then a joiner from 1871 to 1901. His children tended to be mill workers, miners and the like.
Eldest daughter (and grandmother) Martha Horton married William Brook in 1900, leading to uncle Norman Brook.
Gilbert, Elsie and family initially lived in Brighouse town centre, then moved the short distance to the Oaklands estate, Rastrick
(MAP).
Brighouse is around five miles from Huddersfield and Kirkheaton.
The Gumersells
As indicated in other pages, printed spelling of Gumersell’s name (like to Gommersall and variants) tended to be different for each record entry. Unlike most other families considered here, the family also moved a lot, around the Derbyshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire borders. In 1841, home was in Chapel en le Frith and Hayfield, Derbyshire, at the edge of Derbyshire Peak District
(MAP).
Next stop, in 1851, was 10 miles north in Mottram, Cheshire with one child reported as born in Stalybridge, Lancashire. By 1881, the family had moved to the other side of the Peak District to Austonley, Kirkburton in Yorkshire. Then it was closer to Huddersfield at Holmfirth, of Last Of The Summer Wine TV programme fame, where Elsie was born.
Grandfather John was a printer with great grandfather William, and his father John, working as stone masons. Most other family members worked in cotton or woollen mills.
