Description

VideoWin Benchmark measures graphics speeds in terms of millions of pixels per second for six Windows drawing and screen copying functions at all available monitor size and colour settings. The latest version has two additional full screen tests, drawing 10000 random length/direction lines and 1000 ellipses as a 3D like object. Speed for these is measured in frames per second. The 8 tests are:

1 - BitBlt copy from system memory
2 - Drawing small Ellipses
3 - Recangle Fill
4 - Setpixel
5 - Drawing short lines
6 - BitBlt copy screen to screen
7 - Drawing 10000 Lines full screen
8 - Drawing 1000 Ellipses full screen

Test 1 speeds are normally very similar to those for test 6, with the image being cached in video RAM. As shown in the later comparison table, this automatic caching was not provided with early graphics cards and test 1 is much slower. Other examples might be caused by driver deficiencies.

Pre-compiled versions of the benchmarks can be found in VideoWin.zip which also contains the source code and more detailed explanations. A 64 bit version is also available in Video64.zip with comparisons in 64 Bit Graphics Tests.htm. This shows some differences in performance using Vista Classic and Aero desktops. Speed Dependencies

In the above example, it can be seen that the speed of BitBlt copying at 8 bits colour is around twice as fast as at 16 bits and four times faster than 32 bits. With speed in MBytes per second constant, a video memory speed limitation is suggested. In other cases, speed is fairly constant at different colour settings, indicating adequate memory bandwidth but speed limited by the graphics processor. Some tests appear to be faster at higher display size settings. This is where there is a CPU speed limitation with constant CPU time drawing more pixels.

The following examples are at 1024 x 768 x 32 bits. The first is via two different drivers, two CPU speeds (RAM also overclocked) with varying graphics processor and video RAM speeds. Here the new driver only affects ellipse drawing with BitBlt speed increased by graphics core speed and some others according to CPU MHz.

The second example is at three different CPU MHz with constant main memory speed. As with the first example, speed is increased at a higher CPU MHz on Ellipses, Set Pixel, and drawing short lines. None of these examples identify reasons for variations is drawing 10,000 lines but the example log shows dependency on the number of pixels generated and MBytes involved.

Comparison

The following table shows how performance has increased over the years to at least some of the fastest graphics cards in 2003/04. Results are all at 1024 x 768 x 32 bit colour settings, except for the first two which are at 16 bits. The bottom line shows speed improvement ratios of best scores over those for the 1994 80486 card. Most are far greater than improvements in CPU MHz.

A 1024 x 768 display is 0.7864 pixels where a speed of 17M Pixels Per Second would take 46.3 milliseconds to paint the screen or at a repeat rate of just over 21 Frames Per Second (FPS). Looking at systems used for slow and fast results (MMX 2 and A64 3), both take around 42 seconds on scrolling through a 733 line document in Notepad, via the down button. This is equivalent to 17.5 FPS, the speed being controlled by the software. Similarly, using cursor down/up, which is at one line at a time, the time taken varies from 35 seconds upwards, depending on keyboard repeat settings. This equates to nearly 21 FPS. Assuming that column 1 results represent the inherent graphics speed, subject to CPU and memory speed overheads, all except the 80486 would seem to be suitable for Windows based word processing.

A display time of 46 milliseconds might also be acceptable on using image editing software. Using the up/down scroll buttons, the displayed image is not 1 pixel line at a time but can be as high as 150 lines using MS Paint. The graphics package on MMX 2 has 40 line steps and can scroll through a 4000 pixel deep image in 5.75 seconds (100 steps of 57.5 ms or 14 MP/S), well within the graphics speed capability. On moving the scroll bar manually, the display is changed by one line at a time and the displayed image breaks up. At least using MS Paint, this annoying break up is not too apparent at greater than 40M Pixels per second or 20 milliseconds per screen. It could be concluded that any almost any graphics from 1999 onwards would be suitable for image editing.

Drawing pictures using Windows graphics functions is a different issue where the fastest system shown could be made to appear to be slow.
