Description

VideoGL1 Benchmark measures graphics speed in terms of Frames Per Second (FPS) via eight simple and more complex tests. The first six tests portray moving up and down a tunnel with various independent moving objects. The last two tests, included in the latest version, represent a real application for designing kitchens. The first is in wireframe format, drawn with 23,000 straight lines. The second has colours and textures applied to the surfaces, the textures being obtained from photographs of ceramic tiles. The tests are:

1 - Plain colours tunnel, plain colours 1 egg
2 - Plain colours tunnel, textured egg
3 - Plain colours tunnel, plain colours 4 eggs
4 - Plain colours tunnel, 4 textured eggs
5 - Textured tunnel walls, 4 textured eggs
6 - Textured tunnel all surfaces, 4 textured eggs
7 - Wireframe kitchen rotating
8 - Rotating kitchen textured with wall, floor and worktop tiles

The benchmark can be run at all available display settings. As with Direct3D, graphics hardware acceleration is generally only available at 16 and 32 bits and requires at least three times the video RAM space that is used by Windows. That is for a Front Buffer, a Back Buffer and a Z (depth) Buffer. but the benchmark can be run without the Back Buffer. Initially, OpenGL required a specific driver known as a Mini-Client Driver (MCD) or an Installable Client Driver (ICD). Unlike Direct3D, OpenGL 3D acceleration could be provided under Windows NT. Results tables include a BNMI column with B for Front/Back Buffer, N for no Back Buffer, I for ICD and M for MCD.

Pre-compiled versions of the benchmarks can be found in TestOGL.zip which also contains the source code and more detailed explanations. A 64 bit version is also available in Video64.zip with comparisons in 64 Bit Graphics Tests.htm. This shows some differences in performance using Vista Classic and Aero desktops. Dual Core CPU Problem - The benchmark has sometimes failed to run using dual core CPUs. Fixes for this were to either to switch off Threaded Optimization in graphics Properties or Set Affinity to run on one CPU via Task Manager. There is nothing in the program that requests the use of more than one CPU (single threaded).

Speed Dependencies

As shown in the above log file, speed can depend on display colour and size settings. It also depends on CPU speed and the graphics driver used. The first example below shows that a new driver can produce slower performance. It also shows, in this case, the impact of overclocking the CPU and graphics processor/RAM each by around 12%, indicating more CPU dependency on the later tests. Then the Dur 1K results show the effect of a faster CPU where there is little gain on most tests, suggesting that the graphics card speed is the limiting factor.

The second examples show the impact of Anti-Aliasing tests (x2 and x4 in size column). On the older system, performance degradation is mainly far worse.

When the benchmark was produced, OpenGL drivers were not generally available, as reflected in the first result below and the second with a Mini-Client Driver (both at 640 x 480 x 32 bits). The others, at 1028 x 768 x 32 bits, show how performance has improved up to at least the fastest cards in 2003. It is clear that OpenGL speed has improved much more than CPU MHz.

Some laptop results are also shown, with one from 1999 up to one of the best from 2005. These are now quite fast but perform much slower than modern high end graphics cards.
