Description

VideoDD1 Benchmark measures graphics speeds via DirectDraw in terms of millions of pixels per second (MP/S) and frames per second (FPS) using various drawing functions at all available monitor size and colour settings, in full screen mode. The tests are:

1 - DirectDraw BltFast from an off screen surface in video RAM to the screen primary surface - MP/S and FPS.

2 - DirectDraw Blt (with stretch) from an off screen surface in video RAM to the screen primary surface - MP/S.

3 - DirectDraw Blt with COLORFILL to the screen primary surface - MP/S.

4 - As Test 3 but using DirectDraw WaitForVerticalBlank (VSYNCH) to clamp the speed to the screen refresh Hz - MP/S and FPS. The latter identifies the refresh frequency.

5 - DirectDraw BltFast from a large surface in main RAM to the screen primary surface - MP/S and FPS.

Pre-compiled versions of the benchmarks can be found in VideoDD1.zip which also contains the source code and more detailed explanations. A 64 bit version is also available in Video64.zip with comparisons in 64 Bit Graphics Tests.htm. This shows some differences in performance using Vista Classic and Aero desktops. Example Log File

Note constant speeds on DirectDraw BltFast from video RAM with some slower than transferring from main memory. This is unusual. Slow speeds on stretching at 8 bits/pixel suggest that graphics hardware functions for this are not implemented at these settings. BltFill and the second BltFast results indicate that speed is proportional to MBytes transferred.

Speed Dependencies

The following examples are at 1024 x 768 x 32 bits, via two different drivers, two CPU speeds (RAM also overclocked), with varying graphics processor and video RAM speeds. Each change can be seen to produce differences in speed with the largest being with the faster CPU. Some examples in the main tables show that increased CPU speed makes no difference, where graphics performance is the limiting factor.

Comparison

The following table shows how speed has increased since 1994. The results are at 1024 x 768 x 32 bit colour settings, except the first two at 800 x 600 and the 486 at 16 bit colour. Test 4 screen refresh speed results are not shown. Example are included where it is quite clear that something is wrong and speed is far too slow (see AthT 1 and P4N 4).

The bottom line shows that speeds have increased at a greater rate than CPU MHz. Copying from video RAM, COLORFILL and stretching mainly depend on speed of the graphics card with major gains on the latter due to stretching becoming a built in hardware function. Copying from main RAM depends on CPU/RAM speed and graphics capabilities/speed. Here, it seems that ATI Radeon cards do better than nVidia GeForce. Frames Per Second (FPS) speeds suggest that speed of DirectDraw based games would not be limited by graphics performance on most post-1999 PCs and laptops shown.
