Description

VideoD3D Benchmark measures graphics speed in terms of Frames Per Second (FPS) via eight simple and more complex tests used in two earlier D3D benchmarks (Video3D1 and Video3D2). The program uses Direct3D Retained Mode. The last four tests represent moving up and down a tunnel with various independent moving objects. The third test provides FPS that represents screen refresh Hz (half or less if the system is very slow). The tests are:

1 - Rotating egg gouraud shading solid - 736 Triangles/Frame
2 - Rotating egg gouraud shading wireframe - 736 Triangles/Frame
3 - Rotating egg gouraud shading wireframe WaitForVerticalBlank
4 - 500 cubes within cubes, gouraud shading wireframe - 6688 Triangles/Frame
5 - Tunnel, plain colours
6 - Tunnel, textured with wrap
7 - Tunnel, textured with wrap and shadow
8 - Tunnel, more changing textures - around 2200 Triangles/Frame

The benchmark can be run at all available display settings. HAL graphics hardware acceleration is generally only available at 16 and 32 bits and requires at least three times the video RAM space that is used by Windows. If other than 16/32 bits, or the settings require more memory than is available (or Windows NT3/4 is used), tests are run via the slower Ramp software emulation. HAL or Ramp is indicated in the results tables

Pre-compiled versions of the benchmarks can be found in VideoD3D.zip which also contains the source code and more detailed explanations. See also My Main Page for other PC benchmarks and results, including Windows, DirectDraw and OpenGL.

The benchmark could not be compiled for 64 bits as support for D3DRM is no longer provided. VideoD3D9_64 and VideoD3D9_32, 64 and 32 bit varieties, have been produced using DirectX 9 functions, where some of the tests can be regarded as the same as in the original version. See below.

Speed Dependencies

In the above log, speed does not vary much between 16 and 32 bit colour settings and only reduces slightly at higher resolutions. The first example below, with a slow graphics card, shows the complete opposite. The second example shows the effects of a faster CPU where the lowest settings are limited by CPU speed and higher settings by the graphics card. The third example shows performance increases on nearly all tests with a faster CPU and also significant reductions in speed on the first test at increased display settings.

Anti-Aliasing, Laptops

The following are all at 32 bit colour settings. Anti-Aliasing tests (x2 and x4) are indicated in the Emul column. It is clear that Anti-Aliasing leads to a significant reduction in speed but this can be negligible when the application depends more on CPU speed. See also DirectX 9 Results.

Laptops are not generally regarded as suitable for 3D games. The example results are intended to show that performance can be as good as slightly older desktop PCs but it might not be advisable to use maximum screen resolutions.

DirectX 9 Version Description

VideoD3D9_64 and VideoD3D9_32, 64 and 32 bit varieties, have been produced using DirectX 9 functions, where some of the tests can be regarded as the same as in the original version. The compiled benchmarks and source code can be found in Video64.zip. The tests are:

1 - Rotating Egg Gouraud shading, as VideoD3D Test 1
2 - Rotating Egg Wireframe, WaitForVerticalBlank
3 - Rotating Egg and 500 Cubes Wireframe, as VideoD3D Test 4
4 - Textured Tunnel and Rotating Objects, as VideoD3D Test 8
5 - Plain/Fancy Colours, 26 Objects, different movements/rotations
6 - As Test 5 but textured
7 - As Test 6 but using Pixel Shader 2.0, added colours each frame
8 - As Test 6 but using Vertex Shader 2.0, added movement and colours

The benchmark clearly does not plumb the depths of DirectX 9 but it follows the design goals of the Benchmark Collection of being small size, providing a range of useful performance measurements. Unlike VideoD3D, the new program only attempts to run using HAL graphics hardware acceleration. It might not run (error message given) on an old graphics card even though DirectX 9 is installed. It also performs badly on not too old adapters (See results below) and, if more advanced functions were used, it would not run at all via HAL (as proven via Microsoft sample programs). Besides HAL, there are Software or Hardware Vertex Processing possibilities, the former being responsible for some slower results. Tests 7 and 8 are not attempted if Pixel and Vertex Shader 2.0 are not available. This is indicated in the log file.

The benchmark uses d3dx9_26.dll and this may have to be downloaded from Internet.

The objects in Tests 5 to 8 include DirectX 9 functions such as D3DXCreateTorus, D3DXCreateSphere and, would you believe, D3DXCreateTeapot. The benchmark uses simple Matrices, Vertices, Meshes, Lights and Effects, with what must be the simplest examples of the high-level shader language (HLSL).

The benchmark can be driven via commands in a BAT file (supplied), to run using different window sizes and with user supplied image files for textures (F1 to F5). Other commands can be used to provide a burn-in test in conjunction with other tests, where the test and window position can be selected (P1 to P4) - See BurnIn64.htm. Examples of commands are:

DirectX 9 Version Results

Below are results at monitor settings of 640 x 480 to 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 at 32 bit colour, including some at 64 bits via WinXP x64, 64-Bit Vista and 64-Bit Windows 7. Others are to compare Windows 98 and Windows 2000, new driver effects and CPU overclocking on the same PC. Speed is also shown for 1M pixel texture image files instead of 65K and appropriate test scores are given for the original VideoD3D benchmark for comparison purposes. The year that the graphics cards were obtained is also shown, to demonstrate that speed via this benchmark is relatively slow on older cards.

The results for ATHT 2 show that performance is similar via Windows 98 and 2000 and the latest driver produces some slower and some slightly faster speeds. As performance on this PC is limited by graphics card speed, overclocking the CPU by 16% makes no difference. Later results are for an inexpensive DirectX 9 card. This is only faster than the original when texturing.

The ATHB 1 laptop performance is relatively good, compared with the first desktop PCs, unlike the original benchmark. It appears that the laptop can use Hardware Vertex Processing.

The Athlon 64, A64 3, has a DirectX 9 compliant card and produces high FPS speeds. Performance on Tests 1 to 4 is the same with 32 bit and 64 bit compilations, but see below.

DirectX 9 Version Dual Core CPU

Compilations at 64 bits on the dual core CPU A64 3 system, for Tests 5 to 7 and particularly Test 8, are slower than at 32 bits for lower window sizes. Here, performance is likely to be limited by CPU or main memory speed. It was noted that CPU utilisation, on running these 64 bit tests, was up to 65% (100% of 1 CPU and 30% of the other), unlike the 32 bit version. The example Reliability Test log file above shows that performance is even lower when running the benchmark and a CPU test at the same time. Furthermore, the CPU test performance was severely degraded (See BurnIn64.htm). Perhaps there is a cache contention issue on running the particular code on a dual-core CPU.

DirectX 9 Version WideScreen and Dual/Triple Monitor Tests

On executing the program via the EXE file, the test window fills the screen, even with a wide screen. The tunnel test stretches to the edge of the window and Tests 5 to 8 have some objects moving outside the normally viewable area. Run time commands can also be used to test with a wide screen type window.

The benchmark can be used to demonstrate 3D on a dual monitor set up, using command parameters such as "Width 2304, Height 1024" for a 1280 x 1024 monitor and the other at 1024 x 768. On the PC in question, this worked but speed on all tests was around 14 Frames Per Second (on A64 3, see below). Later tests were run using a 2760 x 1000 pixel window across two monitors, one using on-board graphics and the other a PCIe card (see Phen 2a below). This time, speeds were quite fast.

Then Phen2a was set up with three monitors, adding a 1920 x 1080 HDTV via the PCIe card HDMI connection, and using a 4880 x 1024 display. As shown below, speeds were quite respectable. The HDTV was also tested by itself and using the on-board DVI route.
